The Divine Lego Set

An atheist observes all the Lego bricks scattered about and sees them as random and meaningless.

A saint sees the picture on the box and understands that there is a purpose to all this, that it all fits together in an ordered and beautiful way.

All too often, I see the picture on the box and decide to try and put it together on my own, without any instructions. This proves impossible, and my experience is littered with wrong turns, missed steps, and leftover pieces.

The wise thing to do is look for instructions.

The temptation is to look for them in self-help books, influencers, and pop philosophy.

The saint shows us the way, by carefully listening to Jesus, who says, “You see that long blue piece over there? The one with eight studs? Connect that to this flat white brick right in front of you. Great! Now, take that grey brick on your left…”

If we follow His guidance, one step at a time, we will arrive at the end: a beautiful final result with every brick serving a purpose and nothing left out.

The path of faith is the simplest and most effective one.

I know this. Unfortunately, I make it difficult when I get excited and jump ahead. I sense a pattern in what He’s doing, make assumptions of what He’ll do next, and continue the build on my own. This regularly leads me down wrong paths He needs to undo, which only takes up more time.

Thankfully, He patiently nudges me back onto the narrow path well-trodden by saints.

On that path, things get simpler, anxiety fades, and something awesome gets built.

The Brick Master knows what He is doing.
